City of Emmetsburg Accepting Pre-Applications for Community Catalyst Grant Program
The City of Emmetsburg has the opportunity to partner with a local property owner to apply for a $100,000 grant through the Community Catalyst Building Remediation Program, administered by the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA). The program can help spur development in underutilized buildings by assisting with the redevelopment, rehabilitation, or deconstruction of buildings to stimulate economic growth or reinvestment in the community.

At this time, the City of Emmetsburg is accepting pre-applications from property owners that would like to be considered for this grant. A City must be the applicant for this program, and each community is limited to one application. If multiple proposals are received, the City will choose the project that is most catalytic and is most likely to be funded based on the state’s scoring criteria. The City will then submit a pre-application for this project to the Iowa Economic Development Authority. The City will also provide a local incentive and/or in-kind support for the project with an amount based on project size. The City’s contribution will be discussed with the property owner prior to submitting the grant.

A strong application will make use of a vacant or underutilized building, involve rehab of an entire building (not just one floor or area), improve the appearance of the building and downtown, include growth or creation of a business, create jobs, create housing units, and show strong financial commitment from the property owner(s).

If you are interested in this opportunity, please complete the pre-application available at www.emmetsburg.com. Return your completed pre-application by mail or email by Friday, December 1, 2023.

If you have any questions regarding the program or application, please contact our Economic Development Department: Gretchen Reichter - 712-852-2067 or greichter@emmetsburg.com.
Our New Garbage Truck Has Arrived!
After a long wait, our new automated garbage truck has arrived! Residents will soon be able to be able to start using their new roll-out garbage containers. The City of Emmetsburg will spend the next month preparing to "roll out" the new method of solid waste collection by delivering containers to residences, recording serial numbers and addresses of each container, and completing proper equipment training.

Beginning the week of November 6, a third party will work to deliver containers to every residence in Emmetsburg. The City will begin using the new automated garbage truck to collect solid waste in roll-out containers the week of December 4. Daily garbage collection routes will remain the same for the time being. As the process becomes more efficient, the city may combine routes. The public will be kept informed about any future changes.

An informational flyer will be provided to each residence along with the roll-out container. Additional information and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about the new roll-out containers are available on our city website

Plan Now for the Holidays!
Message from the Emmetsburg Chamber

It’s time to plan for the Holidays even if it has been almost summer-like!  Here’s a line-up of Chamber festivities starting in November.

Beautification Planter Decorating Contest
Emmetsburg non-profit organizations are invited to decorate one of the 20 black planters along Broadway and Main. Spruce tips will be put in place the week of November 6, and decorations will be complete and ready for you to vote on your favorite the week of November 24th through December 1st. Voting will be similar to the scarecrow contest, and the prize for the favorite pick is $100 Chamber bucks! Interested organizations may sign up now by contacting the Chamber. The purpose is to give our non-profit organizations some promotion and inspire walking traffic in our downtown.
Mural Park Patio Raffle Fundraiser
The Chamber is part of the Emmetsburg Visioning Committee working to create a public pocket-park at the site of Mural Park. Fundraising continues for the multiple phases of beautifying this area, and now is the time to purchase your raffle ticket(s) for the 55-Qt Taiga Cooler Package, valued at $900+. Tickets are $10 for 1 or $25 for 3 and can be purchased at the Chamber. The drawing will be the day before Thanksgiving on November 22nd. If you are the winner, your holiday shopping could be done! Check out the prize on display at the Chamber office and follow the Community Visioning Facebook page for updates.
Shop Small Saturday + Shop Small Season Challenge
Shop Small Saturday is November 25th. Shop Small bags stuffed with treats and specials will be handed out along with our 2023 Shop Small Season Challenge calendars. We've partnered with the City of Emmetsburg again this year to create a calendar that will keep you shopping and supporting Emmetsburg businesses all season long. Plus you'll have an opportunity to win $25, $50, $125, or $200 in Chamber bucks! The more challenges you complete, the higher the prize potential. Watch for details about more promotions to come at Chamber member businesses!
Holiday Lighted Parade & Home for the Holidays
Save the date - Home for the Holidays will be Friday, December 1st. The parade will begin at 6PM followed by our traditional open house at the Chamber with Santa & Mrs. Claus, treats and music. and horse drawn wagon rides. The Home for the Holidays retail event will be on Friday, December 1st and Saturday, December 2nd. Shoppers will have a chance to win a mystery prize each time they make a purchase at a participating business! Watch the Chamber's Facebook page for more details.
Home Visits with Santa
Santa will stop at homes with children, bringing goodie bags and taking Christmas wish lists in early December. Watch the Chamber’s Facebook page for when the Chamber office will schedule stops and take addresses as well as the number of children in the home. Have your camera ready!
I trust that you will join us as we enjoy the holidays right here in Emmetsburg.

School to School Trail Update

Thanks to generous contributions from residents and businesses, Emmetsburg Community Development Corporation and Five Island Trail reached the fundraising goal for the School to School Trail! Construction will begin as early as next week, weather permitting. Construction will begin on the 10' wide trail section stretching from 1st Street to Iowa Lakes Community College. The 6' wide trail section from the Emmetsburg Middle School/High School to 1st Street will be completed yet this fall if temperatures remain high enough, otherwise the project will be completed in the spring.

Thank you to the organizations, donors, and volunteers who made this project possible!
