Starting & Growing Your Business

Have you ever dreamt of starting a business or taking your business to the next level? If you’re anything like me, the past several months have given root to many new ideas. Maybe for you that’s a business idea. Your dream doesn’t have to be fantasy; make it a reality in Emmetsburg. Between the City of Emmetsburg, Emmetsburg Municipal Utilities, the Chamber of Commerce, and other organizations, there are many financial and educational resources that can help turn your idea into a refined business plan, and turn your plan into an operating business.

The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is a fantastic resource for anyone interested in starting or growing their business. The SBDC provides free, confidential, business coaching services including business plan development, market research, marketing strategies, financing and cash flow projections.

Emmetsburg Municipal Utilities (EMU) has established two low-interest Revolving Loan Funds (RLF) to help new and expanding businesses with financing. The Retail RLF was approved earlier this year and provides up to $10,000 at 1.5% to retail businesses for remodeling, facade improvements, and/or other expansion activity.

Revolving loan funds may be used in combination with Emmetsburg’s Commercial Tax Abatement which provides a three-year tax exemption on 100% of the assessed value added by the improvements.

EMU also offers eligible business a New Business Incentive in the form of a one-year 50% gas utility discount, up to $2,500.

These are just a few of the business resources that are available. This year has reminded us all how important it is to plan, and the City of Emmetsburg and others are here to help. More helpful information about business resources and incentives may be found online at www.emmetsburg.com/ starting-a-business. Additionally, I am happy to have a conversation about your specific ideas, plans and needs.

Patrons will be allowed to visit the library in person to browse the collection and use other in-library services. The following restrictions will apply to this phase of re-opening. Thank you for your support and understanding.

  1. All patrons and staff must wear a mask or cloth that covers their nose and mouth while they are in the library.
  2. Patrons should observe rules of social distancing and obey any directional signs posted in the facility.
  3. Up to ten patrons will be allowed in the library at a time. Appointments must be made by calling 712-852-4009 or emailing info@emmetsburg.lib.ia.us. Appointments will be available in 15-minute increments.
  4. Visits will be limited to 60 minutes, once per day, and we request that patrons use the time to browse the collection or use other library services rather than to meet with others or socialize with staff.

  6. Please keep in mind that the college has only authorized public access to the facility for Wellness Center and library purposes. Please do not attempt to access other parts of the building during your visit.
  7. Please continue to use the curbside bookdrop for all returns. Do not return items inside with you. The library staff will disinfect and quarantine all returns for a brief period.
  8. The library continues to offer curbside service, and we recommend this option.
