Residential Clean Up Week 2021 |
|
|
Emmetsburg Residential Clean Up Week is scheduled for June 7 through June 11, 2021. In order to make Clean Up 2021 a successful community-wide program, everyone must cooperate and follow these simple guidelines. Please call City Hall at 712-852-4030 if you have questions.
Clean Up Week Guidelines: A $15 permit is required and must be purchased from City Hall in advance of your pick-up day. Permits can be purchased with cash or check beginning May 28th. Your pick-up day will correspond with your normal solid waste pick-up day. This is the only day extra garbage will be picked up. The waste should be placed at the curb no earlier than two days before the scheduled solid waste pick-up day. Your permit must be displayed facing your normal garbage pick-up area. Any residence that does not display a permit will only be allowed two bags. Items must originate from the residence where it is picked up. You may not combine or share your tag with anyone else. All waste must be placed in bags or disposable containers. Only furniture that is small enough and light enough to be able to be lifted and placed in the solid waste packer will be picked up. Rummaging through or removing items placed out for pick-up by any person should be done in a neat manner.
Extra Tag Required: Tires and white appliances will be picked up if the required extra tag is purchased from City Hall and placed on the item. Each item must be tagged. There will be no rims allowed on any tire. The fees are:
- Car tire (no rim) - $8
- Pickup truck tire (no rim) - $11
- Microwave - $12
- White appliance - $22
- Dehumidifier - $22
- Air conditioner - $22
Not Allowed: We will not pick up leaves, tree limbs, grass clippings, or any yard waste. It is your responsibility to take these items to the environmental site at the transfer station. Dumpsters and garbage bags that contain yard waste will not be picked up. No recyclables or brown goods such as VCRs, stereos, TVs, fax machines, toasters, can openers, computers, computer equipment, etc. will be picked up by the solid waste crew. No hazardous waste or toxic chemicals - including paint, household cleaners, batteries, etc. - will be picked up. No building demolition or construction material - including siding, plaster, lumber, carpet, etc. - will be picked up. The City of Emmetsburg has the right to reject any items placed out for collection.

Community Pride & Beautification
Spring has sprung, and it’s time for spring cleaning! With our 2021 Clean Up Week just around the corner, it’s the perfect time for Emmetsburg residents to spruce up their neighborhoods and the town. Community members are encouraged to show their community pride by going out and picking up their properties. Take advantage of Clean Up Week and dispose of trash or other items that may be cluttering your yard. Tuck untidy things away in the shed or garage. Tidy up your lawn and landscape, and take any yard waste to the transfer station. Take things a step further and take on a project like planting flowers or giving your house a fresh coat of paint. Take pride in your home and the appearance of it. And not only take pride in your own property, but the community as a whole. Keeping your property clean and well maintained makes the community look great and shows visitors and passers-by that Emmetsburg residents are proud to live here!
The City of Emmetsburg and Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce are working together to beautify the downtown. Using re-allocated grant funds from the Palo Alto County Gaming Development Corporation (PACGDC), the City of Emmetsburg purchased new stainless steel trash receptacles and planters with a Celtic knot design for the downtown district. The new trash receptacles have already been placed downtown, and the new planters will be placed in their new locations downtown next week. With the help of the Emmetsburg Chamber, new plant and flower arrangements with nice colors and textures were selected for the new planters this year. The City of Emmetsburg paid for the plants and materials for the new planters, and local businesses have generously committed to care for the planters and keep them looking great throughout the season.
|
|
|
In addition to the new trash receptacles and planters, the City and Chamber also worked together on the new street pole banners in the downtown district and gateways to the community. Emmetsburg Marketing & Retail Coordinator, Gretchen Reichter, came up with the concept for four different colored banners that showcase Emmetsburg’s assets: Five Island Lake, Five Island Trail, Irish heritage/St. Pat’s celebration, and local shops and restaurants. Re-allocated PACGDC grant funds enabled the city to purchase the new banners, and the Emmetsburg Chamber worked with MidAmerican Energy to get the banners hung earlier this year.
Stay tuned for more community beautification efforts in the future. As the City has been working through the community-wide strategic planning process, community beautification, both commercial and residential, has been identified as a priority. Goals and actions are being developed to ensure that Emmetsburg's downtown area, gateways, and neighborhoods are visually pleasing with well-kept buildings, homes and properties.

|
|
Emmetsburg residents with plans to build houses, additions, or structures such as sheds are reminded they must first submit an application for a building permit to City Hall along with the required fee - either $50 (minimum fee) or $0.08 per square foot on the ground level including attached garage, whichever is greater.
Similarly, prior to starting construction on any fence, an application for a fence and hedge permit must first be submitted to City Hall along with the required $30.00 application fee.
Both applications and the fence and hedge regulations are available at City Hall and on the city website at www.emmetsburg.com/applications.
Please allow up to ten days for your application to be processed.
