Natural Gas Prices
A Message to City of Emmetsburg Gas Customers:

You have likely heard that higher natural gas prices will impact your monthly heating bills this winter. Over the past month, most all newspapers and news channels on TV have been covering this issue. Prices for natural gas have more than doubled from this time last year. Unexpected increases in global demand and limited production and inventory have heavily increased the cost of natural gas.

For many years, the City of Emmetsburg has worked with Clayton Energy to purchase a portion of its gas in advance, at the best possible price, in order to minimize the cost of using natural gas. We have already purchased 100% of our forecasted natural gas usage pre-priced and ready for the upcoming heating season. However, despite our efforts, customers need to understand that natural gas bills will still be higher this heating season.

Based on market prices for natural gas over the last month, customers can expect their total bills to increase by 25-30 percent. This is substantially less than estimates from other energy companies and much less than the current market prices as of today for the upcoming heating season.

There are things that you can do to reduce your energy use. Examples include utilizing programmable thermostats to conserve energy at night and/or while you’re away,  adding weather-stripping around doors and plastic over windows, and lowering your thermostat. The Iowa Energy Office recommends turning thermostats back 7 to 10 degrees for eight hours per day for an annual savings of 10%.

Additionally, the City of Emmetsburg offers budget billing to our customers to help spread the cost of winter usage over the entire year.  Please contact our office at 712-852-2550 if you have any questions.

Envisioning Emmetsburg’s Future at Fall Fest

Members of the Emmetsburg Community Visioning steering committee, City of Emmetsburg, Emmetsburg Municipal Utilities (EMU), and Emmetsburg Community School District (ECSD) were pleased to host over 150 community members at Fall Fest at the Emmetsburg Middle School on October 24th. The event was an afternoon of family-friendly fun and provided the community with the opportunity to envision what’s in store for Emmetsburg in the coming years. Over the last year, leaders from the city and school district, local business representatives, nonprofit organizations, and residents participated in a coordinated effort to identify community priorities and needs and develop a community-wide strategic plan for the City of Emmetsburg and organizational plans for EMU and ECSD. A vision statement was created to encompass the progress we envision in Emmetsburg as the City and implementation partners work to accomplish goals in six priority areas: (1) Attracting & Retaining People, (2) Amenities, (3) Community Beautification, (4) Housing, (5) Infrastructure, and (6) Business Development.

Vision for Emmetsburg:
Emmetsburg, an active and forward-thinking community, is flourishing in 2027! Housing development, proactive infrastructure improvements, and community beautification efforts have revitalized the community. With its thriving businesses, appealing downtown, outstanding amenities, and quality educational and career opportunities, Emmetsburg is a dynamic destination for residents and visitors alike.

The City, EMU, and ECSD’s strategic priorities and goals were showcased at the event as well as conceptual project boards developed through the 2021 Iowa’s Living Roadways Community Visioning program which Emmetsburg participated in. Community Visioning projects were developed through a year-long process involving public surveys, focus groups, a design workshop and public input session. Four project concepts were developed: (1) Community Connections, (2) Broadway Boulevard, (3) Mural Park Enhancements, and (4) Harlan Park Transformation. The local Community Visioning committee will work closely with the City of Emmetsburg to determine feasibility, priorities and potential timelines for these project concepts and their components.

Shop Small Season
Shop Small and Make a Big Difference

Small Business Saturday is just around the corner, and local businesses are gearing up for the busy holiday shopping season. This year the City of Emmetsburg and Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce are partnering on a Shop Small Season marketing campaign to encourage residents to “Shop Small” and “Shop Local” not only on Small Business Saturday, but throughout the entire holiday season. Kicking off on Small Business Saturday (November 27th) and running through Christmas, there will be daily and weekly challenges to get residents to buy from small and local businesses. With each completed challenge residents will be entered to win cash prizes (Chamber Bucks)! More details on the campaign will be released next week. Be sure to follow the City of Emmetsburg and Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce on Facebook to get updates on the promotion.
