RAGBRAI® Riders Will Be "Bikin' the Burg" This Summer!
Local Theme/T-Shirt Revealed
Bikin' the Burg design submitted by Gretchen Reichter
Emmetsburg design submitted by Rob Tahtinen
The Emmetsburg RAGBRAI® theme and town t-shirt design has been selected. Thousands of cyclists will be "Bikin' the Burg" this summer during the oldest, largest and longest week-long bicycle touring event in the world!

Members of the Emmetsburg RAGBRAI® Marketing Committee members met last week to review design submissions for the official Emmetsburg town t-shirt and theme for the RAGBRAI® 2022 overnight stop on July 26, 2022. In total, thirty-six designs were submitted. The committee worked to narrow the selection down to a handful of favorites before selecting two final winners. The winning designs were submitted by Gretchen Reichter (above left) and Rob Tahtinen (above right).

The committee was drawn to the simplicity and clean design of both entries. Reicher's design features "Bikin' the Burg" as the theme and includes a large bicycle, the name of our town, and the event date. Tahtinen's design includes a smaller image of a cyclist along with the name of our community, zip code, and state abbreviation.

With the cooperation of the designers, the committee made small adjustments to make the two designs cohesive and a wee bit more Irish. Shamrocks were added, and a muted green and orange color scheme was selected, hinting at Emmetsburg's strong Irish
 heritage.

The multi-color designs will be printed on the front and back of sage green t-shirts. The color of the t-shirt will serve as one of the colors of the design by utilizing negative space in each design - the bicycle and "the" in Reichter's design, and the green/left background portion of Tahtinen's design.

The committee is currently working to finalize t-shirt details and set up online ordering. Watch the Emmetsburg-RAGBRAI Facebook page and Emmetsburg Reporter-Democrat for details about ordering the official town t-shirt.

2022 Annual Banquet & Awards Presentation
Message from the Chamber of Commerce

Although RAGBRAI preparation has been at the forefront this past month and a half, the annual events of the Emmetsburg Chamber are still taking place as scheduled. A week ago the Chamber got to have our first post-COVID bowling event with ten teams enjoying a great time hitting green pin strikes, eating delicious food, and exclaiming how much fun they had!

Next up is the 2022 Annual Banquet & Awards Presentation scheduled for Monday, April 25 at The Shores at Five Island, beginning at 6 PM. “In the waves of change, we find our true direction” is this year’s theme, and nominations have been requested for the 2022 Citizen of the Year and 5 Under 40 Awards. The MidAmerican Energy Catalyst Award will also be presented.

Chamber President Amy Martini and Vice President Julie Leners have taken the reins and are planning an enjoyable evening for all, and we hope that you will make it a priority to attend. Reservations are $30 per person and may be called into the Chamber office at 712-852-2283 by April 15. Attire is business casual, and since we have a beachy theme, wear your sandals or flip flops. What is important is to come enjoy yourself in a relaxed setting while enjoying time with other business and chamber members.

State's Largest River Cleanup Set to Take On the West Fork of the Des Moines River

The West Fork of the Des Moines River, beginning in Minnesota, and extending into northwest Iowa, will be cleaner, safer and prettier after this summer. This July, hundreds of volunteers will spend their vacation hauling garbage from sixty-one miles of the West Fork of the Des Moines River from Petersburg, Minnesota to near West Bend, Iowa.

The “AWARE” of Iowa Project AWARE stands for A Watershed Awareness River Expedition and is scheduled for July 10-15. Iowa Project AWARE is an unparalleled event where volunteers of all ages embark on a multi-day river cleanup that allows the convenience of participation in one day, all six, or anything in between.

Iowa Project AWARE provides a unique opportunity for Iowans to actively improve the quality of our rivers. Since 2003, nearly 3,000 volunteers have removed over 459 tons of trash from rivers all around Iowa. What’s even more impressive is that 78% of the garbage has been recycled. In previous years, a creative-thinking volunteer even used the proceeds from the scrap metal to stock the river with walleye fingerlings!

Not only is giving back to the environment an instantly gratifying experience, but you also bond with fellow outdoor enthusiasts in your community. Campsites provide an intimate experience with fellow volunteers where everyone unwinds and chats with one another after a day on the river. But the fun doesn’t stop there. Multiple educational programs are held each night ranging in topics from geology, ecology and natural resources to local history and archeology. This year, volunteers will paddle the entire length of the newly-dedicated West Fork of the Des Moines River Water Trail in Emmet County.
