The Christmas season is always a great time of the year to make special memories with those close to you. During this season, I like to take the time to reflect on the many blessings I’ve had over the past year and look ahead with optimism at the coming year. I hope that each of you will be able to recognize and enjoy many of your own blessings this Christmas holiday.
As you spend time celebrating with your family, please keep in mind those military men and women who find themselves separated from their families during this special time of the year. Never forget the sacrifices our uniformed men and women have made in the past, and continue to make year after year.
Remember those that have passed on since last Christmas. Keep their families and friends in your thoughts and prayers as they spend their first Christmas without their loved ones.
Consider sharing your time, talent, or treasure with those less fortunate. There are many out there in need. Look for an opportunity to find these folks and do something special for them. The satisfaction of helping others is truly a great feeling!
I’d like to thank all those that serve on the various city boards. One of my tasks as Mayor is to keep these boards staffed. I make a lot of recruiting calls, and the response from our community members has been exemplary to fill vacancies when needed. If you know any of these individuals, take the time to thank them. Without these volunteers and their efforts, not much would get done.
Small businesses are the backbone of any community. Our local business owners are eager to serve us all. Please, as much as possible, show your gratitude by supporting them.
In the spirit of Christmas, I hope we can all take the time to reflect on what is most important in life and be grateful for the blessings bestowed upon us.
My sincerest wishes to you and your loved ones for a Merry Christmas, a joyous holiday season, and a prosperous, healthy New Year.
May God bless you and your families this Christmas season and always.
Patrick Degen, Mayor
City of Emmetsburg

Baby & Toddler Programs at the Library |
|
|
The Emmetsburg Public Library is introducing new programs for our youngest readers. Babytime and Toddlertime will start on Wednesday, January 11. Both storytimes use the principles from the Every Child Ready to Read program. Every Child Ready to Read states that literacy skills are developed through singing, talking, dancing, writing, and playing.
Babytime is a special storytime specifically for infants ages 0-12 months. Babytime will feature songs, a book read by the leader, movement and bounces, and time for parents to read a book with their infants. Babytime will encourage parent/child bonding as well as language building skills.
Toddlertime is formulated for ages 13-36 months. There will be many similarities between Toddlertime and Babytime, but Toddlertime will include more independent body movement and more advanced books. Toddlertime will feature the same parent/child bonding exercises that will be seen in Babytime, but they will be modified to be developmentally appropriate.
Babytime will start at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 11, and Toddler time will follow at 10:30. Please stick to the appropriate storytime age group as much as possible for your child. Call 712-852-4009 for questions. Advanced sign up is not required.
